The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that industrial runoff with possibly dangerous levels of chromium 6 was discharged between 1945 and the mid-1960s into storm drains that flowed into the Los Angeles River.

Well, that certainly explains a lot!

Steve Allen, the droll comic credited with inventing the modern talk show as the original host of NBC's “Tonight Show,” has died at 78.

Allen was so droll, in fact, that it took two days before his family realized that he had died.

A U.S.-Russian crew blasted off for the International Space Station on Tuesday, but not before following a cosmonaut ritual first practiced by Yuri Gagarin before he became the first man in space in 1961: relieving themselves in the desert.

Actually, the U.S. commander of the crew chose instead to follow a ritual practiced by the first American in space, Alan Shepard: relieving himself in his flight suit.

On Monday the U.S. Supreme Court declined to decide whether a California man was unfairly convicted when a juror made up his mind by flipping a coin.

The Supreme Court justices themselves couldn't decide whether or not to hear this case until Ruth Bader Ginsburg beat Clarence Thomas at “Rock, Paper, Scissors”.

A Russian Soyuz space capsule that spent 198 days in space and flew over 79 million miles is on sale for just $2.2 million.

Originally, the Russians were asking more for it, until somebody discovered than they had rolled the odometer back to only 50 million miles.

The sellers of the capsule say it would make a nice playhouse for kids.

Sure, kids can always use a good dose of space radiation.

Bruce Willis' and Demi Moore's divorce finally became official as of last Thursday, after 13 years of marriage and two years of separation.

Apparently Willis had a “sixth sense” about Demi seeing more than “a few good men” behind his back.

New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens was fined $50,000 Tuesday for throwing the jagged barrel of a shattered bat toward New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza in Game 2 of the World Series.

The sting of that fine will be eased a bit if George W. Bush is elected president, since his proposed tax cut plan includes deductions for large fines incurred by multimillionaire ball players.

NBC has announced it still plans to go ahead with development of the series “Destination MIR,” in which the winner of a “Survivor”-type TV show is launched into space, despite Russian plans to ditch the aging space station in the ocean in late February.

NBC has changed the format of the show a little: now it's the loser who'll get sent up to MIR – right before they bring it down.

Irish rockers U2 have nixed a recording on which Rolling Stone Mick Jagger sang back-up vocals, saying that the song “took a different direction”.

I'm guessing that it took a less “geriatric” direction.

Great. First that nuclear submarine sinks, now this. Haven't the Russians ever heard of recycling?

During the third and final presidential debate Tuesday night, Democrat Al Gore said that he supported a patients' bill of rights to take health care decisions away from HMOs.

According to a nationwide teen character study released Monday, many U.S. high school students lie a lot, cheat a lot and show up for class drunk.

On the plus side, this means that many U.S. high school students are considered well prepared to serve in Congress.

Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore tonight held their second presidential debate in a less formal sit-behind-a-table format.

The debate still got bogged down in personal attacks as each candidate accused the other of putting his elbows on the table.

Both candidates talked about international “hot spots” and how they would address them as president.

Bush said that as president he would personally go to any international “hot spots,” such as the Bahamas and Tahiti, as often as possible.

Gore said that he would continue to address these issues as he has in first two terms as president.

An estimated 35 million people watched the first presidential debate between Al Gore and George W. Bush on Tuesday night, drawing fewer viewers for a presidential debate than at any time since 1960.

In fact, that's the lowest rating since Gore invented presidential debates.
