For those wondering, yes, I have still been writing jokes for The Late Show. It has, however, been a bit of a slow period for me getting jokes on air. I’m certainly not complaining, as they’ve got quite a number of talented writers also writing jokes. Lord knows, I certainly would never encourage my family and friends to start any sort of letter writing campaign to the show, demanding they use more of my material. No, I would never suggest to you, my family and friends, to do such a thing, that thing being starting a LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN TO THE LATE SHOW DEMANDING THEY USE MORE OF MY JOKES. Of course, you’re free to do what you want, I can’t stop you. It’s a free country. But you didn’t get the idea (the idea for a letter writing campaign on behalf of me) from me.
Anyhow, it hasn’t been a total dry spell, as I have gotten credit for some jokes recently. Sometimes they’ll take a joke I’ve written and rewrite it and still give me credit (that is to say, money). One example was from The Late Show back on October 10. I submitted the following joke to the show:
Yesterday at Madison Square Garden they had the annual Cat Show.
I believe this was the biggest collection of pussies at the Garden since the last Knicks game.
Dave closed the monologue with this joke, but with a rewritten punch line:
I’m thinking if I wanted to see pussies at the Garden I’ll go watch the Knicks play.
This joke was also a good example of Dave’s penchant for formulaic jokes. Let’s see, “pussies at the Garden” + Knicks = joke. Voila!
The important thing, of course, is that Dave got a good laugh and I got a check for it.link | comment]
